I received an Advanced Uncorrected Proof of this book from Simon and Schuster Canada in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much Simon and Schuster Canada!
This is a beautifully written book set during the war in Iraq. We follow the deployment of LT Jack Porter and its developments. This book is intelligently written. What I mean by that is, it makes you question war; it makes you question if what your country is doing abroad is right; how collateral damage is always kept under wraps and mistakes are covered up. It makes you reflect on how the action of a few people can ruin the lives of a whole country.
The use of literary devices in this book is just stunning. The author uses the Iraqi landscape to express his thoughts and comments. Once you pick up on it, the read goes from enjoyable to mind-blowing.
Matt Gallagher's character development is impeccable. The character's actions are always natural and believable. By this, he achieves a level of realism with his story that is much needed when addressing the subject of war. In this book, he also addresses the questioning of authority and doing what ine believes is the right thing to do and if by doing so defying orders, still going through with it.
All that is left to say, is that it should be on all of your reading bucket lists.
