I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Lorna Hollifield!
I want to start by saying that when I was approached to review this book, I was intrigued. I've grown quite fond of suspense in the past months, and was ready to give this one a shot. I don't typically read books set in this time period, but I was not disappointed in the least.
This novel took me by surprise in a good way. From a quarter of the way through, I was at the story's mercy. I was completely wrapped up in the plot and characters. I found that the novel was well written, and really carried the suspense throughout. My favourite part has got to be when Sydra tells the fairytale-like story to Dr. Garris. It read with such rhythm and fluidity.
Don't let the description fool you. This book has some heavy and difficult subject matter. I believe that those darker aspects of the book are what enrich the plot and add complexity to the characters. The book explores family dynamics both as a dysfunctional family and as sibling rivalry. If I may say something cheesy, I think that this story is simply well rooted. What I mean by that is that it was well thought through, everything made sense, everything was cohesive, and these things led to the blossoming of the story.
