If you haven't read Plus One by Elizabeth Fama, I strongly suggest you do. If you look on Goodreads, there are mixed reviews about this book, but I will tell you why I thoroughly enjoyed this read.

Firstly, the characters Fama created are beautifully thought out and just so likeable for the ack of a better word.  Sol is a great main character; feisty, speaks her mind and is driven by the love she has for her Poppu. She may appear to be impulsive and irrational, but she does everything with a noble purpose. She is witty, clever, and strongly opinionated. D'Arcy is honestly my favourite character in this book. He is the complete opposite of Sol. He keeps her grounded and focused on her goal. His levelheadedness and resourcefulness prove to be quite helpful throughout the book. I also like how Fama expertly weaved a history between Sol and D'Arcy.

Secondly, the actual writing of this book was actually interesting. Fama used French quite often throughout this book. It worked really well and found myself liking it more than I expected. The plot of this book was fast-paced, logical and captivating. Even though we were thrown into a new dystopian society at the beginning of this book, I never found myself confused. Everything about the world that Fama created makes sense and is not far-fetched at all.

Lastly, what made me really enjoy the book was the ending. Fama didn't do the easy "Happily ever after" and "The End". No, no, no. She took the harder yet more logical route and gave us a worthy ending that JUST MAKES SENSE.

Although I really liked this book, I don't want a sequel. I find that even though Fama is a great writer, the second one would inevitably fall short of this one. The ending of the first book would have no more value since it would be replaced most likely sappy happy ending. Lord knows this is what happens with most sequels...

In brief, if you haven't read this hopefully-standalone book, I strongly suggest you do. I have learned that not only should you not judge a book by its cover, but also not by its Goodreads rating.
