I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review from Give Me Books. Thank you Give Me Books!
This book was okay, and I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. The writing is great and the story sounds enticing, however, the novel really dragged on.
I really feel as though it could've been condensed - especially the middle chunk of the book. It seems as though the end of the book (last 10%) was a ramble to the finish, trying to fit in as many heart wrenching scenes as possible. This is like running a marathon, and then having your heart broken at the end - so laborious and not rewarding.
The length of this book takes away from the very important topics addressed in this book; personal freedom and domestic abuse. Serena's father is a very cruel man, intent on using his daughters as business transaction material to further his wealth and profit his businesses. Her husband is even crueler and does some unspeakable things to her - although I believe that these actions would have surfaced earlier on in their marriage. Again, goes back to the lack of conciseness in this book.
Overall, great idea for a book by a talented writer, but lacking in execution.
