I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you A.M. Johnson!
This has got to be my favourite work by Johnson so far. This book just worked so well for me, and here's why;
Firstly, the main character, Mel, has a troubled past and is filled with self-doubt. I absolutely love reading about broken people finding themselves again, and realizing how beautiful they are. I think that this type of character development is where Johnson excels.
Secondly, the rawness of emotion present in the novel. Whether it be through dialogue or description, the intensity of her characters' emotions really shine through. Your heart will race alongside theirs, and their shock and despair will be yours as well. Johnson is able to make me feel so much, and I am literally putty in her ever capable hands.
Lastly, those poems were my undoing. As frequent readers of my reviews know, I L O V E poetry in novels. Johnson is seriously talented. The rawness of emotion mentioned above is ever so present in these works of mellifluous verboseness (a bit too much? I think not). Can Johnson please write a poetry collection? I would totally read it.
Anyways, I absolutely loved this book and the array of emotions it made me feel.
